Vanguard Loadout is an educational and editorial publication about health-optimization gear. It is not medical advice, and using this site does not create a doctor-patient relationship.
Read this carefully
The content on Vanguard Loadout is provided for general information and educational purposes only. It is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
Although the publication is operated by a licensed physician, Kris Crawford, MD, no content on this site is intended to:
-
Diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or medical condition.
-
Establish a doctor-patient relationship between Dr. Crawford and any reader.
-
Replace the judgment of your own physician or qualified healthcare provider.
If you have or suspect you have a medical condition, or if you are considering a change to your health regimen — including the use of any device, wearable, or product covered on this site — consult your own physician or another qualified healthcare professional first.
Devices, wearables, and consumer health products
Many of the products reviewed on Vanguard Loadout are consumer-grade devices, wearables, or topical products. Some collect or display physiologic data — heart rate, HRV, sleep stages, body composition, blood pressure, ECG rhythms, and similar. Consumer-grade physiologic data is informative, but it is not diagnostic. It is not a replacement for clinical assessment, clinical-grade monitoring, or care directed by a physician who knows your full medical history.
Specifically:
-
A consumer wearable detecting an irregular heart rhythm is not a diagnosis. It is a reason to see a clinician.
-
A smart scale's body composition estimate is not a clinical body composition assessment.
-
A blood pressure cuff used at home is a screening tool, not a substitute for in-office measurement and clinical interpretation.
-
A continuous glucose monitor used by a person without diabetes generates data that is interesting and educational, not medically actionable in isolation.
If a device or wearable surfaces a finding that worries you, do not interpret it on your own and do not interpret it through our content. Bring the data to your physician.
Saunas, cold exposure, and thermal modalities
Heat and cold exposure carry real physiologic effects and real risks. Sauna use is contraindicated in some cardiovascular and pregnancy-related conditions. Cold plunge use is contraindicated in others, including certain cardiac and arrhythmic conditions. None of our content should be used to override medical guidance you have received. If you have a cardiovascular condition, are pregnant, or are taking medications that affect cardiovascular function, thermoregulation, or blood pressure, talk to your physician before adopting either modality.
Topical products and skin care
Topical formulations — including topical peptides, retinoids, and other actives covered on this site — can cause skin irritation, allergic reaction, or interactions with other topicals or medications. Patch testing, gradual introduction, and discontinuation if reactions occur are the responsibility of the user. If you are using prescription dermatologic medication or under the care of a dermatologist, consult that provider before adding products covered on this site.
Recovery devices
Percussive devices, compression boots, PEMF mats, vibroacoustic surfaces, and vagal stimulators are generally well-tolerated by healthy adults but have specific contraindications. Pacemakers, implanted cardioverter-defibrillators, deep vein thrombosis, pregnancy, recent surgery, and active infection are common reasons not to use one or more of these. The product manufacturer's contraindication list and your own physician's guidance take priority over anything you read on this site.
Emergencies
If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call emergency services immediately. Do not delay seeking emergency care to read a review, consult a wearable, or interpret data from a device.
Limitation
We make a good-faith effort to be accurate. Information on this site may nonetheless become outdated, contain errors, or be incomplete. Use it as a starting point for your own decisions, in partnership with your own clinician — not as the final word.
